It also explains how to open and convert an NVivo project created on the Mac platform.
What do you want to do?
- Open a standalone project
- Open a server project
- Open an NVivo for Mac (Version 11) project
- Open a server project exclusively (locking out all other users)
- Clear the 'Recent Projects' list
- Close an open project

-
The Project files list only shows server projects you are permitted to access. If you cannot locate a project, verify with the Project Owner that you are permitted to access the project (either because you are a member of a project user group, or because guest access is turned on). Refer to Collaborate in a server project for more information.
Open an NVivo for Mac (Version 11) project
You can open a project in NVivo for Mac (Version 11) format (.nvpx) saved on your computer or network drive. The project is converted to the Windows format (.nvp).
-
Click the File tab, and then click Open.

Open a server project exclusively (locking out all other users)
If necessary, a Project Owner can open the server project exclusively, locking out all other users. This is necessary when importing structure or content from another project. It can also be useful if you are making large scale changes, and want to be certain you can reverse your changes using the undo function.
-
Click the File tab, and then click Open.
Keyboard shortcut To display the Open Project dialog box, press CTRL+O
The Open Project dialog box opens.
-
Select NVivo Server Projects from the File or Project type list.
-
In the Connection name box, select the server hosting the project.
-
In the Project files box, select the project that you want to open.
-
Select the Open exclusively check box.
-
Click Open.
NOTE
-
If other users are connected to the project, you will receive a message asking whether you want to terminate all active connections. If you choose to proceed, the other users will be disconnected from the project without warning. It is a good idea to make sure that other users are not connected to the project before you open it exclusively—refer to Control access to a server project (See which users are currently connected to the project) for more information.
-
The Connection name box is empty if you have not set up any server connections—click the Add button to create a new server connection using the Connection Properties dialog box.
Clear the 'Recent Projects' list

-
On the General tab, click the Clear Recent Project List button.
-
Click OK.
Close an open project
You can close an open project, without exiting NVivo.
-
Click the File tab, and then click Close.
If you are working in a standalone project, you are prompted to save any unsaved changes.
