Import emails

This feature is available in NVivo Pro and Plus editions. Learn more

 


You can drag emails directly from Outlook 2010 or later into NVivo 11 (Update 1). Alternatively, you can import Outlook emails that you have saved as .msg files.

When you bring emails into NVivo they become PDFs. Any supported attachments are also imported. Refer to About email sources for more information.

What do you want to do?


 


Drag email into NVivo

  1. Open Outlook and NVivo.

  2. Resize the application windows so that both Outlook and NVivo are displayed on the screen at the same time.

  3. In NVivo, open the sources folder that you want to import the email into.

  4. In Outlook, select the emails that you want to import.

  5. Drag the emails into the Sources List View of NVivo.

Import saved email

  1. In Outlook, save the emails you want to import as .msg files.

  2. On the Data tab, in the Import group, click From Other Sources, and then click From Outlook.

The Import Sources dialog box opens.

  1. Browse for and select the file you want to import.  

  2. Click Open.

Import email attachments

If you only want to bring in email attachments, and not the email, you can drag the attachments from an open email into NVivo.

  1. Open Outlook and NVivo.

  2. Resize the application windows so that both Outlook and NVivo are displayed on the screen at the same time.

  3. In NVivo, open the sources folder that you want to import the email into.

  4. In Outlook, open the email with attachments that you want to import.

  5. Drag the attachment into the List View of NVivo.

If the attachment is a document, picture, audio or video file, the properties dialog box displays.
